offered courses

40-Hour Crisis Intervention Training (CIT)

This 40-hour course equips new and experienced first responders with tools to improve safety for both professionals and the community. Participants learn crisis de-escalation and communication skills through instruction and actor-led role plays focused on high-risk mental health encounters.

Youth Crisis Intervention Training (CIT-Y)

This 24-hour (3-day) training focuses on crisis response for children and adolescents, emphasizing the mental health challenges most likely to endanger youth or others in school and community settings.

Advanced Crisis Intervention Training (CIT-A)

This 16-hour (2-day) advanced course is for CIT or CIT-Y graduates and builds on core concepts through complex scenarios such as ERPO implementation, domestic violence assessment, large-scale crises, debriefing practices, and

mass casualty events.

Peer Support Training

This 40-hour training prepares Peer Support providers to understand their role, ethical responsibilities, and legal considerations. Participants learn to support others through mental health challenges while maintaining their own well-being, using real cases and guest speakers.

Preventing Targeted Violence (PTV)

Dr. Nielsen has trained professionals in targeted violence prevention and intervention around the US and internationally since 2018. We offer a 101 (awareness-building) and 201 (prevention and intervention) curriculum that can be delivered in a short-form 90-minute compact version, or teams can dive into the full 2-day curriculum. Dr. Nielsen designed and provided DHS-funded psychoeducation for K-12, University, and multi-disciplinary professional audiences throughout Colorado. In any format, the training is meant to increase public safety around mass casualty events that target schools, houses of worship, large stores, public gatherings, and other locations to make a personal or ideological statement using violence.
